Many of the fundamental assumptions which have guided practice in the schooling that most of us have experienced, and in our management of ourselves, others, organisations and the environment, are inadequate or mistaken. For example, the way we conceive, teach and apply knowledge in many disciplines serves to limit our ability to see things freshly, as they are. We tend to assume that having defined things, we know what they are. We do not. Most of us live in a world deadened by mental abstraction. We have commonly understood intelligence to be the ability to comprehend or interpret the world by perceiving and choosing between differences. It is widely seen to be a function of the intellect. This view of intelligence sees us and places us as functioning 'in' the world, but experiencing the self as separate from it.

However, my doctoral research confirmed that it is possible and, more to the point, necessary for human beings to live intimately connected with the world. What I call Deep Intelligence may be understood as our ability to prosper, in the broadest sense, through connectedness with the world. Human intelligence is a function of the combined operation of all our faculties. We need to move beyond notions of a 'knowledge era' and a 'knowledge economy' and to move ourselves into a 'consciousness economy', an Era of Deep Intelligence.

There is nothing inevitable about the ways we have created our lives, our organisations, and the world we live in, and the ways we haven't. Each of us can play a far more conscious and active role in the creation of our individual experience than we commonly assume we can. And we can take far more responsibility for the world we create together. Indeed, it is vital that we do so, if we are to overcome the challenges we have individually and collectively created for ourselves.
